Preparing the Concrete Roof Deck

The original roofing was removed to expose the concrete deck beneath it. This gave the crew a clean starting point and allowed the new spray polyurethane foam system to bond directly to the structural surface.

Whiting Construction applied a black primer across the concrete before installing the SPF. Concrete can present adhesion challenges if its surface is not properly prepared. The primer created a suitable bonding surface and helped the spray foam adhere to the deck.

The photograph on the left shows the primed concrete before the foam application. The image on the right shows the same area after the SPF system was installed.

Rebuilding the Roof Edges

The existing edge flashing was removed rather than incorporated into the new system. Whiting Construction replaced it with gravel-stop flashing featuring a seven-inch vertical rise.

Edge flashing helps contain the roofing system at the perimeter and directs water away from the roof edge. The taller vertical rise also provided a defined termination point for the newly applied SPF.

Roof perimeters require careful treatment because they are exposed to water movement and wind forces. Replacing the flashing allowed the new system to connect with newly installed metal rather than relying on older components.

Replacing Rooftop Equipment Supports

The roof also contained wooden sleepers and curbs supporting the air-conditioning equipment. These components were removed and replaced with galvanized metal units.

Wooden rooftop supports remain exposed to moisture and can deteriorate over time. Galvanized metal provides a more durable supporting surface and greater resistance to corrosion. Replacing these components before spraying the foam also allowed them to be properly integrated into the finished roof.
