Riverside National Bank

Riverside National Bank had already planned to reroof its four-story facility. That project became urgent after Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne damaged the existing system in August and September 2004.

The Hurricane Damage

The existing roof consisted of a polyvinyl membrane installed over insulation board and mechanically fastened to a steel deck.

Mechanically fastened systems depend on individual attachment points to hold the roofing assembly in place. During the two hurricanes, wind forces pulled away and tore off large sections of the membrane. The remaining material could no longer provide a complete protective surface for the building.

The facility’s four-story height also increased its exposure to wind. Roofs on taller buildings can experience substantial pressure changes as wind moves across the walls, corners, and roof perimeter.

Removing the Damaged System

Whiting Construction removed the membrane that remained after the storms. The insulation board was also removed, exposing the structural steel roof deck beneath the damaged assembly.

Removing the remaining system allowed the crew to avoid installing the replacement roof over loose or compromised materials. It also provided direct access to the steel deck for the spray polyurethane foam application.

The SPF Roofing Solution

Whiting Construction sprayed SPF directly onto the exposed steel deck. Jake Neves and Mike O’Bryan are pictured applying the foam during the project.

Unlike the previous system, which relied on mechanical fasteners, SPF adheres directly to the prepared substrate. The application creates a continuous roofing layer across the deck without separate membrane sheets or conventional seams.

The roof was finished with 30 mils of elastomeric coating. This coating formed the exposed protective surface over the foam and completed the waterproof roofing assembly.

The replacement addressed both the immediate hurricane damage and the reroofing work the bank had already planned. The completed SPF system provided a seamless roof across the entire 8,000-square-foot facility.
