This project involved installing gravel-coated spray polyurethane foam roofing across several new construction buildings in St. Lucie West. Together, the completed roofs covered approximately 37,000 square feet.
Why New Construction Matters
Installing SPF during new construction differs from restoring an existing roof. There was no deteriorated roofing system to remove or repair before installation. Instead, the roofing system was applied over the buildings’ steel roof decks.
This allowed the SPF to become part of the original roof assembly. The foam conforms to the surface beneath it and creates a continuous layer across the deck. Its seamless application limits the number of joints that could become vulnerable to water intrusion.
The Roofing System
Each building received an SPF roofing system finished with a gravel coating. The spray foam forms the insulating and roofing layer, while the gravel provides additional surface protection.
Installing this system across multiple buildings required consistent application from one roof section to the next. Each completed roof needed continuous coverage around transitions, edges, and other changes in the steel deck.
Built for Florida Conditions
Wind performance is especially important for new buildings in Florida. A properly designed and installed SPF roof can provide strong resistance to wind uplift because the foam adheres directly to the roof substrate.
However, calling any roof “hurricane-proof” is too absolute without documented testing, engineering specifications, and an approved system rating. A more accurate statement is that these SPF roofs were installed as hurricane-resistant systems suited to South Florida’s demanding weather conditions.
The completed project provided all buildings with seamless, gravel-coated SPF roofing from the beginning of their service lives.
